Investing in the future of Dreamers

The city of Boston is no stranger to providing youth-oriented public services. Opportunities like the Youth Jobs Program, the Summer Youth Employment Program and youth services provided by various neighborhood initiatives can all prepare young people for success in both their professional and personal lives. However, such opportunities are not always available to undocument youth, blocking off paths that are already difficult to navigate for those living in diaspora communities. This barrier did not go unnoticed by city officials, and […]

15 minute neighborhood

15 minutes for equitable living

During a forum held by the Boston Foundation on September 24, the Boston Indicators and the Massachusetts Housing Partnership’s (MHP) Center for Housing Data released a report, titled 15-Minute Neighborhoods: Repairing Regional Harms and Building Vibrant Neighborhoods for All. A 15-minute neighborhood is defined as one where living necessities, including grocery stores, hospitals, schools and even recreational outdoor space, are all accessible to residents within a fifteen minute walk from their homes. Yet, while many use this buzzword to simply […]

Clean Up Chinatown Day of Service

Student volunteers from Boston University, as well as AACA staff and City Councilor Ed Flynn, held a day of service to help clean the streets of Chinatown. On Sunday September 26, the group gathered at the Chinatown Gate before giving back to the community by helping to keep it healthy and clean. Various efforts to help clean Chinatown have been pushed for over the years, including the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center’s We Love Boston campaign, Tufts University partnerships and the […]

Double Chin Brings Double the Flavor

Double Chin, owned by sisters Emily and Gloria Chin, is a staple restaurant located in the heart of Boston’s Chinatown. Happy to see that it was still a thriving business post-Pandemic, I revisited them to check out their extensive menu, which now features new additions for tasting. Double Chin’s kitchen offers modern Hong Kong cuisine with a twist. The generously huge plate of Surf N’ Turf, which goes for $26, was a great Chinese appetizer to start with (popular in […]

Baijiu cocktails

Ganbei! Baijiu Cocktails are Here

As I’ve said often, Baijiu, the famed Chinese spirit, is the Durian fruit of the spirits world —  both having a reputation, primarily with non-Asians, of possessing a foul aroma and taste. However, both are misunderstood, and Baijiu itself comes in a variety of flavor profiles, including plenty which would appeal to almost any American consumer.  It is the most popular spirit in the world, with the top five most valuable spirit brands in the world all being Baijiu distilleries. The sixth spot […]

Funding Received to Support Boston’s Seniors

Boston Senior Home Care, a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to caregivers, older Americans, and people with disabilities in low-income households, was awarded a grant of $721,800. Given by the Age Strong Commission, Boston’s Area Agency on Aging, the funding comes directly from Title IIIE of the Older Americans Act (OAA). The OAA was passed back in 1965, as a response to the need for stronger support systems for older and aging Americans. With this grant, Boston Senior Home Care […]

Gun Lobbyists Target Asian Americans

Since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic over a year ago, individuals and organizations alike have been concerned about an ongoing problem: reactive violence toward the Asian American community. While many have advocated for Asian and Asian American safety through advertising campaigns, local events, and city politics, one industry in particular has taken to this tumultuous time as a unique marketing opportunity – the firearms industry. With the ever growing population of Asian Americans, gun lobbyists have shifted their sights […]

Catalyst, DICES, and Diversity in Clean Energy

Since 2012, the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) has awarded $7.2 million to 138 new clean technology enterprises and research teams. In late August of 2021, the MassCEC, MassVentures and the InnovateMass program launched a $2.6 million grant package with their Catalyst and Diversity in Cleantech – Early Stages (DICES) programs to support clean energy innovation, specifically from women or minority-owned startups. The programs aim to ensure that early-stage ventures have the necessary resources to advance critical technologies toward sustainable, […]

Mayor Kim Janey announced on August 10 that she had proposed a $50 million emergency relief plan “to support an equitable recovery and reopening for Boston residents, workers and small businesses, using funding the City of Boston has received from the federal government following the passage of the American Rescue Plan (ARP),” according to a press release from the City of Boston. Boston is expecting to receive Over $500 million through ARP through the end of 2024. While many Chinatown […]
