Kien Lang and Huiling Zhu, Longtime Boston Volunteers, Receive Community Hero Awards at ABCD Annual Celebration

On Nov 3, 2023, Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) will recognize 18 individuals for their significant dedication as volunteers to all of Boston’s diverse communities. . Marking a significant moment in the event’s history, Kien Lang and Huiling Zhu have been included in this prestigious roster. This inclusion stands as a noteworthy testament to the commitment of Asian Americans to help improve the lives of others who live in Boston.

Incorporated in 1962, Action for Boston Community Development, Inc. (ABCD) has evolved into a crucial resource for over 94,000 low-income residents who live in the Boston area. ABCD President and CEO Sharon Scott-Chandler has emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts and community involvement in recognizing the 2023 Community Heroes. She states, “I am proud and honored to recognize all of our 2023 Community Heroes. ABCD doesn’t do this alone. Collaboration and community are at the core of our work and beliefs.” This statement underscores the organization’s commitment to community engagement and its reliance on collective action to drive positive change, further solidifying the significant impact of the individuals honored as Community Heroes.

Kien Lang stands out as an exceptional recipient of the Community Hero Award, having helped many Boston families through his impactful efforts at AACA. Kien leverages his expertise in IT to make a difference. In an interview with Sampan, he reflected on how his expertise in the IT sector has enhanced his ability to serve as a volunteer, stating, “My experience in the field of IT has enabled me to become a more effective volunteer.” He shines in his role as a mentor in the AACA Low Income Taxpayer Clinic and has been volunteering for over twelve years. He also has found his niche in assisting elderly Asian Americans who are not proficient in English, by addressing their tax issues in their native language. “This opportunity to make a difference in their lives is a major reason why I have remained committed to this cause for so long,” Kien shared. In response to this honor as a community hero, Kien states that “It was my honor to be nominated.. I think there are a lot of excellent individuals who have devoted themselves in creating a better Boston better fit for this honor than me” Mary Chin, AACA CEO, describes Ken as an invaluable member of the AACA team because of his genuine compassion for his clients.

Similarly, Huiling Zhu, nominated by ABCD Elder Services, has found a profound sense of purpose and community connection in her retirement years. Introduced to the ABCD AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparents program by a friend, Huiling has been a Foster Grandparent at the Josiah Quincy School since 2017. Her role involves providing indispensable support to students in need, aiding them in reading and comprehension, worksheet assignments, arts and crafts, and enhancing their language skills in Chinese learning classes. Her commitment not only aids the students’ academic development but also fosters a sense of cultural connection and support.

Together, Kien and Huiling stand as pillars of commitment and involvement. They embody the spirit of the Community Hero Award with their actions and dedication.  In this spirit, their dedication to others will continue to drive positive change, fostering a brighter, more inclusive future for all in Boston.
