Bilingual Street Signs Unveiled

“I want to especially say thank you to the residents of Chinatown, for advocating to have signs in Chinese,” said city councilor Ed Flynn, “This sets an incredible example in the resiliency of the Chinatown community.”

On the rainy day of December 28, 2021, people gathered under umbrellas at the Chinatown Gate to witness the unveiling ceremony of new bilingual street signs. “I want to especially say thank you to the residents of Chinatown, for advocating to have signs in Chinese,” said city councilor Ed Flynn, “This sets an incredible example in the resiliency of the Chinatown community.”

“We finally got our [efforts recognized with] bilingual street signs in Chinese and English [being installed] in Chinatown, so it is a happy day for us. We have been pushing for this for many many years,” expressed Jiajie Wang, a board member of the Chinatown Residents Association, with the help of a translator.

“Putting up signs, bilingual signs, may…look like a small step, but it is a huge step in terms of what we’re representing and what we’re trying to recognize,” said MA state representative Aaron Michlewitz.

“I am incredibly honored to pick up the mantle and build on the work and advocacy,” said mayor Wu, “This is incredibly powerful for the residents of Boston…for visitors to Boston who will know and feel comfortable, and know that they can appreciate the delights across [Chinatown].”
