While the summer may be coming to a close, The Greenway is still full of activity. You can join the Greenway Conservancy this season in Chinatown on The Greenway for upcoming festivals, farmers markets and more!
Pao Arts Center’s annual Experience Chinatown Festival uplifts the neighborhood each year with happenings throughout the month of September. Spaces all over Chinatown will be activated with performances and art installations in collaboration with local businesses and artists. Public performances featuring music, dance and more will take place on September 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 25th. You may also want to mark your calendars for the annual Lantern Festival, hosted by Chinatown Main Street, which will take place on Saturday, September 18 and will include annual favorites such as Lion Dances, music and performances.
This summer, the Greenway Conservancy has been delighted to host a brand new farmers market at Auntie Kay and Uncle Frank Chin Park, produced by Chinatown Main Street in collaboration with the City of Boston Food Access Program. This outdoor market features local vendors offering fresh produce, Chinese vegetables, bakery items and fresh seafood. The Chinatown Farmers Market will take place on September 4 and 18, and continue through October 2021. Accessibility has been taken into account for lower-income families, as Boston residents receiving unemployment benefits can qualify for a Chinatown Farmers Market coupon booklet worth $75.
For families with younger children, free play sessions will occur in Chin Park every Thursday, featuring a variety of activities such as books games and more. Bring your family, support a local restaurant or bakery, and spend your evening playing outside by the Greenway PlayCubes. Greenway Play Sessions take place every Thursday from 5-7p through October.
On top of these special events, you can also celebrate Chinatown with a new weekly tradition. Throughout the summer and fall, Lion Dances occur weekly at the Chinatown Gate in Chin Park, welcoming everyone to Chinatown and parading through the streets. Lion Dances take place every Saturday until September 18 at noon, weather permitting. This event is possible with the support of Chinatown Main Street, the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of New England, the Chinatown Business Association, and the City of Boston.
