Underdog Hot Chicken

Underdog Hot Chicken drumstick and wing

Underdog Hot Chicken (first location with another in Fort Lee, New Jersey) is a recent entry in the former Kim Tofu’s space located in Allston to serve hot chicken. They have a simple menu of three kinds of combos: Hot Chicken Sandwich, Chicken Tenders and the 3 wings and 3 drumsticks all come with one side and a drink. They do have a simple array of sides.

They take inspiration from the Nashville Hot chicken which gets their spicy heat from the breading from hot sauce and cayenne with a spicy sauce drizzled atop for more added kick. Their Hot Chicken Sandwich combo comes with one side and drink for $14. Two big chicken tenders using white meat in a soft brioche bun, kaleslaw, pickles and their comeback sauce comes with gloves and wipes as it is messy but delicious task. I got the mild heat so it was perfect for me with a hint of spice, the kaleslaw paired well with balancing the heat from the comeback sauce and the chicken tenders. Best to eat this hot chicken sandwich as soon as it comes out for the best experience. There are five levels of spice: no heat, mild, medium, hot and crazy dog. My favorite one so far that I have in a long time. For the side, I got their potato salad $4.50 more the Korean style kind with less mayo, a bit sweeter, carrots, and corn in it. The kaleslaw $4.50 is with kale matches well with their sauce without being too dry was delicious. Their mac & cheese $4.50 used spiral past with a nice panko crust that does the job.

When I got the combo #3 is their 3 wings and 3 drumsticks was a big portion on white bread. The chicken was still delicious and crispy after a one hour commute home for a take out order. Great flavor, crispy skin and the inside meat was juicy and well balanced. So addictive. The price point is a bit on the pricey side but the quality is very high with generous portions. Their fried pickles side $4.50 has slices of pickles with light crispy breading matched well with their accompanying dipping sauce. Definitely check out Underdog Hot Chicken for their version of the Hot Chicken Sandwich the next time you are in Allston.

Sampan Interviews a Vietnamese Native About Gun Culture in Vietnam and the US

As of 2018, Vietnam’s homicide rate was 1.52 per 1000 people, the 57th lowest in the world. Compared with the US, where the homicide rate was 4.88 per 1000 and we were the 157th lowest in the world, it’s no wonder that the biggest threat for many living in Vietnam is being victimized by pickpockets and bicycle thieves. Vietnam’s homicide rate is lower than France, Finland, Canada, and Thailand. In 2015, when Vietnam restricted civilians from gun ownership, a black […]
