Tufts Vaccinates Community Elders

This past month Tufts Medical Center administered more than 160 COVID-19 booster doses to Chinese-speaking seniors, meeting them where they live.

Tufts Medical Center collaborated with the Chinese Progressive Association to administer doses at several senior housing sites. Tufts MC heard from seniors that they are thankful Tufts were able to bring the vaccines to them, given their mobility issues, difficulty waiting in line for long periods, and so on. While the Tufts MC clinic has been very busy, Tufts appreciated the opportunity to work with our community partners and bring the boosters to the community and help to keep our communities safe. If you are 18 years and older, you are eligible for the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 boosters. The Pfizer COVID-19 booster is now available to anyone ages 16 and older if they are at least 6 months post their initial Pfizer vaccination series. Tufts Medical Center will have interpretation services present for residents who are non-English speakers.

The FDA and CDC allows for the use of a booster of a different brand than the original series although the benefits of this approach are not yet clear. In general, you can get the same vaccine brand that you received with your original series (example: Pfizer to Pfizer; Moderna to Moderna; J&J to J&J). The following groups could benefit from a mix and match approach, if desired. Please discuss any questions you may have with your primary care provider first:

  • Females under age 50 may want to consider opting for a Pfizer or Moderna booster, although they may choose to proceed with J&J.
  • Males under age 30 may want to consider opting for a J&J booster although they may choose to proceed with Pfizer or Moderna.

In response, a coalition of 20 organizations, carefully selected through an RFP process, emerged with a collective goal of driving positive change across Boston’s diverse neighborhoods. “In the wake of the CHNA, we strategically harnessed the findings to address pressing health needs through targeted interventions,” states Sherry Dong, Executive Director […]
