Mayor Lisa Wong leads with grace under pressure
It’s hard to believe now, but Fitchburg Mayor Lisa Wong was voted second-most bashful in high school.
“Now I speak all the time publicly,” Wong said. Today, the first Asian American mayor in Massachusetts speaks with confidence and poise: making eye contact, holding her chin up and smiling warmly.
AAPI Mental Health Forum addresses silent suffering
The fourth annual Asian American & Pacific Islander Mental Health Forum, “Making the Invisible Visible,” took place on May 17 at Simmons College. More than 100 professionals attended the forum.
Overcoming Asian American challenges
In May 2000, during a celebration of Asian American Heritage Month, I was asked by the US Army Corps of Engineers to talk on “The Asian American Experience” (http://blog.sciencenet.cn/home.php?mod=space&uid=1565&do=blog&id=685780). In the talk, I briefly reviewed the history of legislation against Chinese Americans and Chinese immigration. I touched on various incidents, including the 1980 Vincent Chin case, the scandal of Chinese campaign financing in the ’90s, the Wen Ho Lee case and the covert college admission quota for Chinese Americans in the present day.

Diabetes in Asian Americans
There are two major types of diabetes – type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is a condition that the body stops producing insulin completely. In the case of type 2 diabetes, the body is either unable to produce insulin and/or not be able to use insulin properly. Up to 95 percent of the diabetes found in those of Asian American descent is type 2 diabetes.
Asian breast cancer event highlights courage
The Asian Breast Cancer Project and Asian Women for Health Celebration took place March 28 at Tufts Medical Center. The event raised awareness about breast cancer among Asian and Pacific Islander immigrants through songs and survivor testimonials.
ATASK hosts ‘You for Me for You’ talkback Jan. 31
In 1993 ATASK raised awareness and funds for the first shelter and advocacy services for domestic violence survivors in New England with performances featuring Asian American artists. ATASK is thrilled to be collaborating with Company One in hosting playwright Mia Chung at the NE Premiere of her play “You for Me for You,” the first of ATASK’s anniversary celebration events in 2013.
