A leadership team from Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Mo., is coming to Tufts Medical Center to speak about Emergency Management — response, recovery, and rebuilding — and share their powerful story of how, in May of 2011, their hospital was completely destroyed by one of the deadliest tornadoes in United States history. The tornado resulted in over 160 fatalities, injured hundreds more, and left nearly a third of the city of Joplin in ruins. This will be the Joplin leadership group’s only New England speaking appearance. The session will be open to the media, in addition to other hospitals throughout New England, Boston first responder agencies, and state-wide Emergency Management, EMS, Fire, and Law Enforcement personnel.

Commonsense Care

As the U.S. Supreme Court deliberates over the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, the law modeled after Massachusetts’ Health Care Reform, the Commonwealth is moving on to its next phase. Since the 2006 landmark health care reform law passed, the Commonwealth has achieved near-universal health insurance coverage (95%) of its residents, and almost all of its children. The goals ahead are maximizing efficiency, encouraging preventative measures, and recalibrating the payment system. But the inclusion of many documented immigrants was only recently affirmed after a long struggle.

The Preschool Corner – Bilingual Learners

The Preschool Corner - Bilingual Learners

Children all over the world learn to speak the language of their families. We have lots of knowledge about how this happens, but it’s still undeniably a mystery. We know one thing for sure: children learn to speak in the context of community; that is, they need people to talk to them! No one learns to speak by listening to TV or tape recordings. Talking with children and near children, is how youngsters learn to understand and use language. Reading to young children, especially when they are sitting on your lap and looking at the book, also seems to help children learn their first language.
