BOSTON, Mass. — To prepare young people to swim safely this summer, registration is now open for the YMCA of Greater Boston’s spring Learn to Swim Program. Lessons are available for swimmers of all ages and are tailored for individual experience levels.

Registration for the YMCA of Great Boston’s spring Learn to Swim Program begins Feb.  12 for non-members and runs through Feb. 25. Registration fees vary by class and on line registration is encouraged.  Over the past 12 months, the YMCA of Greater Boston’s Learn to Swim Program has evolved to be more effective, affordable and convenient to meet busy parent’s schedules.

The YMCA of Greater Boston learn to swim programs are based on participant level and age. These categories include Swim Starters, Swim Basics, and Swim Strokes. To determine which class and location is best for you visit their web site at www.ymcaboston.org/swimming.

Swim Starters: develops water enrichment and aquatic readiness in children ages 6 months to 3 years. This category focuses on developing swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences. Parents also learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents, and how to plan for emergencies.

Swim Basics: develops personal water safety and basic swimming skills for students of all ages. Swimmers develop a high level of comfort in the water by practicing safe water habits, engaging in underwater exploration, and learning how to swim to safety and exit if they fall into a body of water.

Swim Strokes: introduces and refines stroke technique in older students (school age, teens and adults). Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills, and build stroke technique.

Since 1909, the YMCA has been  “America’s Swim Instructor.” The YMCA of Greater Boston is an accessible community resource that encourages lifelong enjoyment of swimming and teaching the necessary skills to prevent drowning.
