The family of Lu Lingzi, the 23-year-old Boston University graduate student from China whose life was tragically cut short by the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15, 2013, announced the launch of the Lingzi Foundation on March 31. The mission of this non-profit organization is to help provide educational opportunities for courageous, adventurous and ambitious students like Lingzi and support organizations that are making a positive impact in their communities. The Lingzi Foundation has eight athletes running the 2014 Boston Marathon to raise funds for these efforts.
“Lingzi was a bright and confident young woman who yearned for life, loved beauty and pursued happiness,” said Lu Jun, Lingzi’s father. “The Lingzi Foundation will honor the life and dreams of our beloved daughter. She was full of love and compassion and enjoyed a splendid life experience here in Boston. We hope to carry on Lingzi’s positive spirit and encourage others to follow their passion and to pursue their own dreams.”
Lingzi, a native of Shenyang in Northeast China, had a lifelong dream of studying in the United States. She arrived in Boston in the fall of 2012 to pursue her master’s degree in mathematics and statistics, which she was scheduled to complete this year. Lingzi is remembered as an exceptional student, a respectful and enthusiastic young woman and an aspiring connoisseur of food.
According to Lingzi’s father, her experience in New England was so positive that the family has chosen to continue their connection through this foundation and collaborate with local organizations including Boston University and Discovering Justice. The Lingzi Foundation, which has applied for 501(c)(3) status, will offer scholarships for students who share Lingzi’s drive to enrich their lives, explore new ideas and break down barriers. The foundation will also recognize and support organizations that share her ideals and are making strides in bettering the community.
Team Lingzi consists of Peter Brigida III, Yuemei Chen, Manuel Gonzales, Michael Haroz, Peter Kelly, Faith Sands, Rebekah Stein and Alana Van der Mude. To learn more about Team Lingzi, and support the runners in their campaign goals, visit lingzifoundation.org.
