Asian-American Women’s Political Initiative graduation May 17

We cordially invite you to the Asian-American Women’s Political Initiative (AAWPI) Annual Graduation celebrating the 2014 AAWPI State House Fellows! Keynote speakers Senator Linda Dorcena Forry and Mayor Lisa Wong will be joining our celebration, so we hope to see you there. If you’re unable to attend, you can still support AAWPI by donating to our Indiegogo campaign or directly through the AAWPI website.

Celebrating its fifth year, AAWPI is the only political leadership organization for Asian-American women. AAWPI was founded to engage, empower, and build leadership among Asian-American women to ensure that Asian-American women and the Asian-American community have a voice in their government. Nationally, less than 0.5% of state legislators in the United States are Asian-American women.

To change the continued invisibility of Asian-American women in government, AAWPI’s State House Fellowship Program targets a core part of the problem: the lack of a pipeline of Asian-American women ready to lead policy and political change. With the dearth of Asian-American role models in government, AAWPI is stepping in to develop an infrastructure to mentor and train the next generation of Asian-American women leaders.

Since January, seven State House Fellows have been interning part-time in legislative offices and participating as a group in rigorous, biweekly training and programming at the State House. These topics range from the intersection of race and gender to analyzing the budget and understanding the legislative process. Throughout these varied sessions that served as a crash course in government, the Fellows have strengthened their commitment to political and civic action.

We invite you, as a supporter of AAWPI and its mission, to join us in congratulating the AAWPI 2014 Fellows as they complete their programs. If you are interested in attending our event, please confirm your RSVP with Marian Manapsal by Wed, May 14, 2014 through email (mtmanapsal@gmail.com) or by phone at 650-291-4465. Thank you for taking the time to listen to us and we hope to see you there!
