Boston, MA: IBA – Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción presents its exciting annual group exhibit MUJERES with eight artists of varied origins, including Puerto Rico, Argentina, Peru, Philippines, Colombia and more. MUJERES: Iron Maidens explores the dual nature of feminine strength in contemporary society – a hermetic, externalized armor, which often betrays a tempestuous interior. Coinciding with Women’s History Month, a selection of local and international artists responds to themes of identity, sexuality, nationality and their intersections.
Opening reception for MUJERES: Iron Maidens is Friday March 28, 2014 6pm-9pm at LA GALERÍA at IBA’s Villa Victoria Center for the Arts (85 W. Newton St, Boston, MA. 02118).
Artists Candace Khaokham, Corazon Higgins, Creighton Baxter, Ivette Salom, Joanna Tam, Migdalia Luz Barens-Vera, Shey Rivera, Verónica Meloni, and Ximena Izquierdo Ugaz challenge normalized societal representations of and attitudes toward women and womanness through the creation of personal narratives involving autobiographical archives, national symbols, conceptions of childhood and more. The artists are working in a diverse range of media including video, performance, drawing, metals, photography and text.
At the exhibit’s opening reception on March 28, 2014 from 6-9pm there will be live performances by Providence-based ISLANDS (Shey Rivera + Jason Curzake) and locally based Creighton Baxter.
MUJERES: Iron Maidens is co-curated by Anabel Vázquez Rodríguez & Ximena Izquierdo Ugaz and will be on view to the public starting on March 21, 2014 during our Friday gallery hours, 3-6pm.OPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY, MARCH 28, 6-9PM
