Governor Patrick Announces Boston-Beijing Nonstop Flights

BOSTON – Governor Deval Patrick announced Dec. 4 the global marketplace will be connected with Massachusetts better than ever before when nonstop service between Boston and Beijing begins in June 2014 on Hainan Airlines.

Hainan is Mainland China’s only certified Skytrax® five-star airline, and has won many awards for service, including being voted “Best Airline in China” by Premier Traveler Magazine twice. The airline will begin service four days a week using the Boeing 787 aircraft in two class service.

The new route is being introduced to meet the strong demand for business travel, as well as growing demand for leisure trips, between Boston, which is a center of higher education, health care, finance and the biotechnology industries and Beijing, the capital city in China which is the world’s second largest economy.

“Nonstop service from Boston to Beijing will open up new commercial and economic opportunities, and I thank Hainan Airlines for their partnership in achieving this significant milestone,’’ said Governor Patrick.

Massport and the Patrick Administration have been meeting with Hainan since 2007, when the Governor traveled to Beijing. Most recently, Gov. Patrick met with Hainan executives in his office in September of this year.

“Boston is the 6th largest airline passenger market in the US to China and the largest without nonstop service; this new route will help the regional economy, boost tourism and provide a convenient connection for tens of thousands of visitors,’’ said Richard A. Davey, Secretary and Chief Executive of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and Chairman of the Massport board.

“Getting nonstop service to China has been a long sought goal for Massachusetts,’’ said Thomas P. Glynn, Massport’s CEO. “The economics and the range of a new generation of aircraft, like the 787 and the Airbus 350, make new nonstop routes from Boston to every corner of the globe possible.’’

The total origin-destination market between Boston and Beijing, plus the 32 China cities accessed via Hainan’s Beijing hub, represents over 151 thousand passengers and $134 million annual revenue in 2012.

“We are delighted to finally be able to bring Hainan Airlines’ famous five-star service to New England.  The new flight provides the fastest way to get to Beijing, the capital of China,” said Pubin Liang, Managing Director of Hainan Airlines in North America.  “Business, leisure and educational travel and trade between the United States and China has been growing dramatically. This wonderful new link will stimulate this growth via the important Boston gateway.”

Nonstop service will save business and leisure travelers about six hours on each roundtrip because they will not have to connect at a hub airport in the US or overseas.

Hainan will start the service with four flights a week in each direction on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Flight 481 will depart Beijing at1:50 p.m. and arrive in Boston at 3:10 p.m. Flight 482 will depart Boston at 5:10 p.m. and arrive in Beijing at 6:50 p.m. the next day.

Hainan’s service with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner will feature 36 fully flat-bed business seats configured 2-2-2, as well as 177 economy seats configured 3-3-3. Each seat has a 15-inch touch screen panel and a power outlet. Each business seat also has a USB port.

The new service will bolster Massachusetts as a major tourist destination attracting more than 21 million visitors a year. Chinese visitors are the fastest-growing segment of US tourism.

Boston Logan, 15 minutes from the intersection of Route 128 and I-90 and five minutes from downtown Boston, serves as the gateway to the New England region and offers nonstop service to 75 domestic and 36 international destinations and in 2012 handled 29.3 million passengers. Boston Logan is served by two public transit lines and is the Air Line Pilot Association’s Airport of the Year for 2008 because of its commitment to safety.
