Walczak calls on gaming commission to reject Suffolk Downs application unless Vornado agrees to background check or divests from Suffolk Downs
BOSTON – Bill Walczak, candidate for mayor of Boston, today called on the Gaming Commission to reject Suffolk Downs’ casino gaming license application unless Vornado Realty Trust LLC, current owner of nearly 20% of Suffolk Downs, submits to the background check required for all applicants or divests itself of its Suffolk Downs holdings.
In the letter to the Gaming Commission, addressed to Chairman Stephen Crosby, Walczak said of the Vornado’s business practices:
This company’s history in the city of Boston and elsewhere gives me great pause and provides for grave concerns for East Boston, Suffolk Downs and the city of Boston if they are allowed to go forward without scrutiny during your licensing process.
“The public’s trust in the process is at stake,” said Walczak. “We can’t allow any special favors for Suffolk Downs and Vornado.”
