Boston, MA –January, 2012 – In the recent 79-71 loss to CCRI, Roxbury Community College’s star forward, Tyrus Weaver went out of the game toward the beginning of the 2nd half with an injury to the groin. The battle with CCRI was rugged and many of the RCC players fouled out of the game. Tyrus said, “It was a tough game and a tough loss. I ended up having to get back into the game and play hurt, you know…”

Tyrus is used to pushing himself to the limit. He was one of the top players on the 2009 State Champion Windsor High School team out of Windsor, CT. Tyrus led the team in scoring, was All State and All Conference 3 consecutive years, culminating in his appointment to the McDonald’s All American Game in his senior year.

Tyrus had thought about attending RCC directly out of high school but took a chance on a school in Oklahoma. He said RCC’s Men’s Basketball Coach Kwami Green kept in contact with him and built a strong bond and relationship. That relationship was what led to Tyrus’ decision to transition to RCC.

Tyrus says the team’s success is centered on that type of community and culture, “…we’re successful because we’ve build a strong bond on and off the court, you know, we’re able to play together on and off the court…” and he made it clear the spirit of the team was attributed to Coach Green, “…Coach doesn’t expect a lot out of us, only the best. He wants us to just work hard, uh, play hard, and encourage us to play our best.”

Tyrus isn’t just succeeding on the courts for RCC, he said, “…I like the school a lot. I’m enjoying my classes and getting the best grades of my life.”

Roxbury Community College is a co-educational public institution of higher education offering Associate Degrees and certificate programs. RCC’s primary objective is to provide residents of the Commonwealth, specifically those individuals living in the greater Boston area, “optimum opportunity for access to a college education consistent with their interests and aptitudes and to reduce to a minimum economic, social, psychological and academic barriers to educational opportunity.” The college’s goals are the result of ideas generated by and from the college community and reflect a response to the needs of the larger Roxbury community.
